The Big Game

So a few words about the big game. The Moncton Wildcats beat the Halifax Mooseheads 4-3. Well, in all seriousness, as I was driving to Amy's house in Dartmouth from our rehearsal (after which we had a painfully long list of notes from our assistant director! j/k), I turned on the radio and they actually carried that game to completion and joined the Canada / US game five minutes in. Most frustrating - did anybody outside of the Moncton Coliseum actually care about the outcome? Just apologize and go to the national feed already. At least they didn't hang around and do a post-game show.

I got to Amy's before there was any scoring. Anticipating a favorable outcome for Canada, they baked gold, silver, and bronze cakes for each medal-winning hockey country (representing both men's and women's, interestingly enough!). Especially cute was the icing on the last cake that said "3rd Place Finnish".

Incidentally, Montreal hosted the Olympics in 1976 and won the Stanley Cup in 1977. Calgary hosted in 1988 and won in 1989. Maybe this trend will continue for Vancouver? I wouldn't bet on them winning this spring (in fact don't bet on any team with lots of Olympians - recall the unheralded Edmonton / Carolina final in 2006!), but why not next year?

It's amazing that we've made it this far to have seen this game. I remember when I was in Ukraine five years ago and I would routinely often every evening have a beer with the other Canadian guy on the program we were in. We talked a lot about hockey, and we often looked ahead to this game and talked about what it would be like to be in GM Pla Canada Hockey Place today. I don't know if he made it to the game or not but I know he was watching. As was pretty much the whole country. If you weren't watching this game, what were you doing? ;-)

So now we're watching the Closing Ceremonies - oh man, the bit with the mime raising the last pillar... that was priceless. We all laughed and said it was awesome.

Oh boy. Two midterms tomorrow. I'd better hop in the car as soon as this wraps. Still have to study for chemistry again!
