Funny Phone Calls

Ever gotten one of those pre-recorded messages about your vehicle's factory warranty perhaps having expired? I did, this morning on my cell phone. Most annoying. I've gotten one at home back in Bedford, too. Clearly it's a scam of some sort, but I don't really know the specifics. Searches only turn up people who are having the same experience. There doesn't seem to yet be a government website saying, "Relax, we know who these dirtbag shysters are and are taking action." At least somebody is playing games with the sleazebags and finding out a bit about them.

Phone number on my caller ID: 949-256-9170

The number belongs to Digitcom Services Inc., but all they probably do is supply the connection. They have their own lookup form, which brings me to the... um... Telephone Management Corporation. Yeah. Presumably these General Warranty Services people - I'd link to their website, but a box comes up to use a form-filling program that is probably spyware - are one of their clients.

The stupid part is that all of this is spillover from the USA. (Although I'm sure they'd have no problem taking my money for one of their faux warranties anyway.) One of the drawbacks of having an integrated phone system, I suppose. They must just be donkey-punching numbers in and calling them. What I'd like to know is, where does this end? Will the telephone service end up like e-mail - useless because of spam?
